Sneak Preview 2: The Entrance

Terrific Thursday!

Here's another sneak preview of the book, while I'm down south for some R&R with the family. Today's excerpt comes from a moment where Simon has discovered the secret magical world of Alix, Maya and Karl (three fairy tale kids) and encounters the stress and pressure entering a heavily secured magical city, which is a metaphor for modern airport screening nowadays (heh heh).

“It’s alright, Simon,” Alix said, not bothering to look over. “It’s just a Magical Device. There are hundreds of them, in no way dangerous. Security is just checking. Hey that’s new…”. People started to thin out in front of them and Simon could see that individual smaller gates were set up each with a single globe pulsating above them. Each gate was manned by two or three men and women in dark green outfits, with heavy brass wristbands and large conical hats with a circle and vertical line running down it.
Alix’ attention was now also aimed towards the security. “Yeah, Fairyland Security has installed these guys. A real pain.” An old bent woman in rags was pointing angrily at a rack holding six crystal containers with an assortment of nasty looking liquids. She was raising her voice. “Only 4 vials? In my day we could take our cauldron wherever we wanted! Curses on you all…”
Simon felt his hand holding the box grow cold and looked down. His hand and the box had completely disappeared in a swirling bulb of fog. It was freaking him out. “Hey! Leggo!” he shouted.
Some heads were turning, security personnel as well as bystanders. Alix turned to Simon and him to calm down. He then saw that Simon's complete arm had disappeared in a length of pulsating fog. Even Maya and Karl looked nervous. An Oger in front of them had just taken off his giant boots was waved through by a security guard as he walked towards them. The fogs in the meantime had started to freeze Simon’s hand and he felt needle pricks running up his arm.
Simon continued to shake his hand, but the mists wouldn’t let go. Overhead orbs had started to shine more brightly and now more guards were coming closer. One of them was an Oger like the one he had met before. A sting like from a bee struck his hand and Simon yelped.
“What is going on here?“ A stern looking security guard stated to Simon. “Element and Mythology please.” The guard held a small wooden board with a crystal in it that he began waving along Simon’s face. Sesame was squeaking angrily and trying to bite the mists that were now covering Simon’s legs all the way up to his stomach.
Maya and Alix both jumped in. “Um, he’s human sir. He has no Elemental affiliation.” Alix said.
“He’s giving off rather strong magical emissions for a human then.” The guard stated as his crystal board was flashing brightly as he passed it over Simon’s left hand.
Maya and Alix were talking heatedly with the guards who now seemed to have taken a keen interest in Simon. “He’s with us. There is nothing going on. He’s just a densie, sir” Alix was pleading.
Another sting. Simon could not feel his arm anymore and was panicking.
Sesame started screeching and pulling at Simon's face. Simon shaking his arm looked up and looked in the direction Sesame was pointing. He saw two men, dressed in burgandy cloaks with long black hair and black sunglasses up ahead, with a bobbing head of blond curls between them. Sally! Simon shouted her name. The girl looked up and around, confusion and a sleepy look on her face. The men started to move faster away from Simon. “SALLY! That's my sister! Alix. Maya! My sister is over there!”
Maya, Alix and Karl simultaneously whipped their heads around. “There!” Alix shouted. “They're heading for the exit!”
      “Vat?” asked a confused Karl.
“Sir,” cried the security guard, motioning to his colleagues, now forcefully grabbing Simon.
“Let go!” Simon shouted and pulled loose from the man, trying to get to Sally. The fog restricted his movements and he tripped falling to the ground. A sharp pain in Simon's thumb indicated that the box had cracked and a splinter jabbed into his hand. Aelementals around him now gave wide berth to security who jumped on top of Simon. Sesame was pulling at the man's ears and Alix and Maya were being constrained.
“Stand down sir. You are in violation of the Fairyland Security Code Three, Twelve.....” the Oger rattled off as his wristbands glowing fierce red runes. He grasped Simon’s free arm painfully. Simon looked up into the monstrous face and felt his opportunity to save his sister slip away. Anger boiled up in him and he felt like his head was going to explode.
“I SAID LET ME GO!” Simon shouted in a loud booming voice as an explosion of bright white light flattened all around him, shattering globes and scattering fog, leaving the area as black as night and Simon drifting into a dark void.

more tomorrow.....
