Alice...
She is a busy gal lately. Frank Beddor wrote an update/continuation of the classic Lewis Carrol story, which is quite the enjoyable read. I am currently watching last year's addition to the story, the SyFy series 'Alice', which also takes on a modern take of the story. And of course, the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp adaptation is right around the corner. So what to make of all of these adaptations and continuations? I have not a clue, but it's nice to see that a work of fiction, that often is considered too low-brow to be taken seriously by adults, is now just the opposite: very accessible.
It gives me satisfaction, because it is in direct line with what we're trying to do with our series. We've basically taken all of the childhoods favourite stories (not just Alice, but she'll be a part of it) and reverse engineered them into a new epic mythology that connects and then transcends all of the individual stories to create one root story. It's so far as I know unique in its approach and concept, but of course we also have to make it just one heck of a good story. And whenever reinventions of old stories come out, it only really feeds into what we're trying to say with our little tale. All the characters and their stories from fairy tales, ancient Greek stories (Clash of the Titans, Percy and the Olympians anyone?), legendary heroes (Robin Hood) and classic monsters (The Wolfman) are fully alive today as they were on the moment of conception. And we provide the reason for that.
Like I'm going to give away The Big Secret... ha, foolish reader.
Still, it is also nice to see new stories being told, one of the best storytellers is right now in your local cineplex: Terry Gilliam with his no doubt brilliantly absurd 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus'. Go check it out and tell me what you think.
