Here's yet another sneak preview of the book, while I'm down south for some R&R with the family. Today's excerpt is an exciting one (of many) and a comical interlude, where Alix and the monkey Sesame find themselves in a precarious situation after having appropriated a crop duster (don't try this at home kids). I like it because of the way it describes the magic.
The plane was sputtering. A tremor rocked through the entire body.
“What the Gollum was that?” Alix said. We woke up from his little snooze he was having and looked around. It was morning and both Sesame and Alix and been asleep. With some precautions in the form of protective and sensory Charms Alix had went to sleep safe in the knowing that no one would be able to detect them and that they wouldn't fly into anything either. Another shuddering of the plane woke up Sesame.
“Eek?” the squirrel monkey said. He too looked around, but saw nothing that could have caused him waking up. Instead of going back to sleep Sesame started digging around in the bottom of the cockpit for something to eat. Already Alix had been impressed with the bits and pieces of food the original owner of the plane had left behind.
They were too low for turbulence and there were no birds nearby. Alix looked down at the instrument panel. He ticked against the indicator amazed that they had gone this far. The needle was deep into the red. Groaning Alix searched the folds of his jacket.
“If only my favourite little Fairy was still around,” Alix grumbled. “We could have just flown ourselves without this metal death trap. Although I still remember having to pick out the bugs from my hair each time. We need something organic that I can use to either fuel this sucker or to land us safety.” Sesame looked up from under in the cockpit. He held out the wrapper of the coconut chocolate bar he had stolen earlier.
“That's not going to help,” he cried out. “That's all plastic and foil. Oh, wait,” Alix reached out and grabbed the wrapper, but Sesame refused to release it. “Let it go.” Alix pulled harder. The monkey was extraordinarily strong for being such a tiny monkey. “I...just...need...” and Alix snatched a flake of coconut that was left in the wrapper. He let go sending Sesame to fall back into the bottom of the cockpit.
“There, this should do it,” Alix said proudly. The plane shuddered as the engine now was rotating irregularly. It would stop, start up again madly and stop again.
“Cerebus' Bones!” Alix cried out and performed a Charm, green flickering and glowing around his arms and down into the plane. Tendrils of light green vines sporting purple flowers wrapped themselves around the body of the plane hanging off of it, whipping in the wind.
“That's no coconut, that's a flake of soybean!” Alix yelled. The propeller engine died now completely with a final groan of its own and the plane headed towards the jungle treetops. Sesame shrieked and climbed onto Alix’ head, much to his annoyance.
“Get off you stupid monkey. Get off!” Alix shouted as he tried to peel Sesame's little claws from his face. Alix couldn’t see. If he was going to die horribly being ripped to shreds among the trees, he at least wanted to see it coming. He finally got Sesame's hands off of him as the plane crashed into the trees.tomorrow the last part...
