Good Morning,
When I wrote yesterday about the trappings of not getting on with the actual writing I never realized how much in tune I was with my biggest supporters (so far, my co-writer Nancy and my dad). They both voiced more or less the same thoughts haunting the backside of my head, which is that this blog might be a distraction itself from the actual writing. Or like my dad put it:
Nice idea the blog on writing. So far it has been all about everything else but that. Time to put nose to grindstone, switch off the TV, burn the cinema tickets, trash the Internet and all of its distractions, lock the door, throw away the key, put bum in chair and write, darn it!
Nancy voiced similar fears of me getting too caught up in the blog to actually commit to conceiving the book. They both found it sound advice to sit behind the computer each day and not leave it until an x amount of words were typed (Nancy thought 1500 would be good, my dad referenced Stephen King who types a busty 2000). Could it be that I am defaulting on writing by doing this blog as well? Or is the misconception with them for not seeing that I use this blog as a digital watch monitor to keep me straight on the writer's path. After all, I put up a little counter on the right to indicate where I am at the current moment and already feel ashamed I can't seem to get past chapter 15 within a decent amount of time.
But maybe that's because I am looking at progress by chapter rather than words. Well, I will count the words today and let you know tomorrow how many I typed, hopefully somewhere around 1500-2000. We'll see. I'm not Stephen King (who I think is the fastest writer in the West) but I also think I can do better then Dan Brown and J.K.Rowling who's books seemed to take forever before they reached the shelves. Then again, maybe their stories were just that good and anticipation ran too high to be patient.
I will have you know though that yesterday for the first time in months did I write the whole day, with minimal interruption from others or by myself as the only other program that I had open was iTunes with some soundtracks playing to keep me in the mood.
Does anybody know any good music to listen too when reading/writing a young adult fantasy novel?
Hint: Think Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Series of Unfortunate Events.
